What We Offer

Summary

Master of Science in Translational Medicine (MSTM) is a joint venture between Keck Graduate Institute (KGI) of Claremont Colleges and City of Hope. As a National Cancer Institute (NCI) - Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and one of the nation’s best cancer hospitals, City of Hope also houses a renowned bench-to-bedside research institute with 100+ principal investigators working toward the treatments and prevention of cancer, diabetes and HIV/AIDS. In 2018, City of Hope is among the top 4 institutes in California (along with Stanford, UCSF and UCLA) receiving grant and contract awards from NCI. Our investigators contribute to more than 500 publications annually in top journals that include Nature, Cell, Cancer Cell, Nature Medicine, New England Journal of Medicine and more. In addition to going through a rigorous series of didactic courses in drug discovery and development at KGI, students in this two-year Master’s program will conduct cutting edge Master’s thesis studies in areas across basic, translational and clinical research at City of Hope. Through our clinical mentorship program, students will have the unique opportunity to interact with City of Hope’s clinician scientists to gain a better understanding of the most current disease treatments in our hospital and the remaining challenges that our clinicians are facing in cancer treatments. Our MSTM students will also go through advanced technical training conducted by the center of bioinformatics, the research shared resources, as well as clinical services at City of Hope. These training sessions will equip our students the relevant skills that they can apply to their Master’s thesis research and future biomedical/clinical careers. A MSTM to PhD bridging program will be launched in Spring 2021 to provide a direct path for outstanding students who complete the MSTM degree to enter PhD in Translational Medicine (PhDTM) program at the Irell & Manella Graduate School of Biological Sciences at City of Hope to continue their biomedical research training at the same time earn a PhD degree.
